Today our District Governor, John Chambers, visited our Club and brought us up to date on District 6400 happenings.
President Lisa called the meeting to order, and we followed with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Invocation.  Today's guests were introduced - Doug Morison potential new member, Dr. Andrae Townsel soon to be inducted new member, District Governor John Chambers, and Sandy Chambers wife of District Governor John.  Welcome everyone.
Announcements for the day included a reminder of the Past President's Dinner on October 7th at Hickory Creek Golf Course, President Lisa then introduced District Governor John Chambers to talk to us briefly before lunch.  DG John talked about membership, satellite Rotary clubs (one club, different meeting times), combined club projects, the new Kingsville Ontario Club started last year, and the new Rotary Club that Roberto Sanchez is working on starting in Southwest Detroit.  Other topics covered were the new E-Clubs that are being started, and the rapidly growing membership in Rotary in the Far East part of the world.  DG John talked about our families, including our Rotary family, our biological family, our religious family, and our family of friends and our perceptions of each of these families.  He encouraged us to include our families in our Rotary activities.
DG John also updated us regarding District Conference at Kalahari Water Park and Resort on May 15 - 17, 2020, in Ohio.  One of the speakers will be Astronaut Mike Foreman, who is also a Rotarian.  For more information and/or to register, please see the District Website at
Here is just a little background on District Governor John Chambers.  John is a member of the Rotary Club of Detroit A.M. where he has served as President, Secretary, and Foundation Chair.   One of his favorite causes is literacy.  He has worked on literacy projects with his Club and other Rotary Clubs and he serves as a board member of the Detroit Public Library Board and also works with the Oakland County Library Friends.  He and his wife Sandy enjoy traveling, golfing, playing with grand children, and church.  John has volunteered in many capacities over the years including international travel on medical missions to Haiti and Nicaragua, El Salvador for water/school building, and Tanzania with Rotary, as well as a volunteer fire fighter, first aid and CPR instructor, and work on various regional and statewide committees.  John is a retired Financial Officer from the Court system and Detroit Public Library and is a C.P.A.  We are truly blessed to have John as our 2019/2020 District Governor.
We enjoyed dinner and afterwards DG Chambers presented the "Do The Right Thing" Award to two of our members, Bill Brown and Roland Leist.  DG Chambers had asked our President Lisa to nominate a Club member for this honor, and Lisa chose members Bill Brown and Roland Leist who both have a long history of serving their community and their fellow members of society.  Congratulations Bill and Roland.
Our Club then had the opportunity to present DG Chambers with a gift of a donation of $100 to the Detroit Public Library in honor of his year as District Governor.  We also presented his wife Sandy with a gift for her home.  A big thank you to both John and Sandy for sharing this year of their lives with their Rotary family.
