President's Message

I am excited to be the President of our Club this year as we roll out our new website and relaunch our club bulletin, The Canton Rotator. We have had a busy summer and early fall with speakers, a tour of the historic Bartlett Travis House along with a catered lunch, our District Governor's visit, the District Governor's Golf Outing, and our "Purple Pinkie Day" to celebrate World Polio Day.  This last event was very successful.  We collected approximately $250 from patrons at our local Holiday Market.  This will be matched by our Canton Rotary Foundation, and will purchase mosquito nets be sent along with volunteers who are going to Pakistan and India in February to immunize children against polio.  These mosquito nets will act as an incentive to parents to bring their children for immunization.  Many parents in these countries are hesitant to expose their children to strangers, but this gift should help ease their fears and result in more children being immunized.  We will be inviting the Rotarians who are going on the immunization trip to one of our upcoming spring or summer meetings to speak to us about their adventure.  Please watch our speaker schedule for this event.
We have many exciting upcoming events.  Please check our website often so that you do not miss any of our speakers or projects.  If you are not a Canton Rotary member, don't let that stop you from visiting our meetings and enjoying our fellowship.  If you have questions or need clarification on any of our events, please call our Executive Secretary, Susan Kowalski, at 734-968-1436.

Topic Today: "Adopt an Angel Program" with the Salvation Army.
John Kowalski opened our meeting on time today and we had the following announcements:

Our guest speaker today was Christian Smith as Project Ministry Coordinator for the Plymouth Salvation Army.  He spoke today to the club on the "Adopt an Angel Program" for the Canton/Plymouth/Belleville area.  This is a Christmas Holiday toy gift program for needy families.
As we do some good work with the Salvation Army there, please check them out  at:
No Sergeant today (whew).  And once again this month, President John got a shot at the 50/50, but got the Jack of hearts.  Fresh Italian pasta with chunky tomato sauce was the main dish today.
World Polio Day
The Canton Rotary Club celebrated World Polio Day with a "Purple Pinkie Day" collection at Holiday Market in Canton.  We were very successful and collected approximately $250 which will be matched by the Canton Rotary Foundation and will supply mosquito nets to be given to parents in Pakistan and India as an incentive for them to bring their children to be immunized.  This will take place in February 2018 when several of our District 6400 Rotarians go abroad to immunize children in these countries.  Please watch our website for updates on the trip in the spring.
District Governor Visit
Visit by our District Governor Rick Caron
We were honored to have District Governor Rick Caron visit our Club for his official visit on Monday, September 25, 2017.  Governor Rick presented President John Kowalski with his Paul Harris Fellow pin with 4 sapphires. Our Club presented Governor Rick with 2 math books (he is a math professor and department head at the University of Windsor) and a "Let Love Grow Bear" along with a certificate certifying that the Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree in Governor Rick's honor.  Our Governor gave us an overview of his goals for the year.  Thanks for sharing your love of Rotary with our Club Governor Rick.
Club Meeting Notes of 10/9/17
Topic Today:  Human Trafficking in the U.S.
John Kowalski opened our meeting on time today.  In addition to the speakers and events scheduled in our new calendar (please check it out), we discussed the following topics:
  • Lisa gave the club an update on the results of the District Golf Outing event.
  • Salvation Army food drive - The club reviewed the list and Lisa will follow up on a possible designated item (like stuffing).  The club also received a thank you note for the last backpack fundraiser there.
  • The Windsor Roseland Club is looking for donations for mosquito netting via the Polio+ drive and our club will participate.
  • Thanksgiving Dinner was discussed at the club and tentatively planned for the 20th of November as done last year.
Our guest speakers today were David and Sarah Han from NorthRidge Church and the topic was human trafficking.  They spoke to the club on the rapid increase in human trafficking in the the U.S. and the fact that those especially affected are often children.  They also distributed a pamphlet on their yearly fundraiser "Love Runs" from NorthRidge Church and the programs targeted by the proceeds.
Check it out  at:
Ansel was our Sergeant today. His program focused on short story telling of a golfing favorite memory or a "happy dollar" memory.  President John got a shot at the 50/50 only to miss it by one card (2 of hearts).  Excellent Italian beef ravioli was on the menu today.
