Welcome to our second Canton Rotator for December 2017.  We are happy to have you as a subscriber.  As the holidays approach, we would like to wish all of you a Very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
We have had a busy past month.  Below you can review and share all of our activities.  While it has been a very rewarding month, we also had sad news at the end of November and the beginning of December.  Mary Leist, beloved wife of member Roland Leist, passed away on November 23rd after a short illness.  We will miss Mary and her ready smile and kind, caring nature.  We extend our deepest sympathy to Roland and his family.  Please check out the Tribute to Mary below.
On December 3rd, we lost our dear member Greg Gatto.  Greg was the proprietor of the Roman Forum for 30 years, and a member of the Canton Rotary Club for 38 years.  He served lunch to our members every Monday at noon from 1977 through June of 2007.  After he retired, he joined us in the dining room for our Monday meetings where we enjoyed his fellowship.  We will miss Greg and his smile and gentle nature.  We extend our deepest sympathy to Greg’s family.  Please check out the Tribute to Greg Gatto below and the pictures attached to it.
We have many exciting upcoming events.  Please check our website often so that you do not miss any of our speakers or projects.  If you are not a Canton Rotary member, don't let that stop you from visiting our meetings and enjoying our fellowship.  If you have questions or need clarification on any of our events, please call our Executive Secretary, Susan Kowalski, at 734-968-1436.

A Tribute to Greg Gatto
We remember our dear member and friend Greg Gatto.  May he rest in peace.
Today we laid Greg Gatto, a dear member of the Canton Rotary Club, to rest.  We celebrate his life with us in the following pictures.  Greg joined Canton Rotary on January 1, 1979.  For 30 years he was always with us at our Monday meeting, not in the dining room, but serving us as the proprietor and head cook in the kitchen starting in 1977, even before he became a Rotarian.  The Canton Rotary Club met at the Roman Forum for 30 years - from 1977 through June 2007.  From July 2007 through mid November 2017 he joined us at the table in the dining room for fellowship.  We will miss him dearly, and we consider ourselves privileged to have been his friends for 40 years.   Here are pictures of Greg that we would like to share with you.  photoalbums/a-tribute-to-greg-gatto
A Tribute to Mary Leist
We will miss your smiling face and your loving presence, Mary.
On November 23, 2017, Mary Leist, the wife of member Roland Leist, departed this life.  We all remember Mary as an energetic lady who had a smile for everyone.  We will miss her smiling presence dearly at our family functions.  Our deepest sympathy to Roland and his family.  Here are a few pictures that we would like to share with you of Mary.  photoalbums/a-tribute-to-mary-leist
Visit of Jeanne Knopf DeRoche with Ghana School Update.
Jeanne Knopf DeRoche visited the club today to update us on the School Project in Ghana.
John Kowalski started our meeting today on time.  We are sad to have the loss of one of our long time members Gregory Gatto and Mary the wife of Roland Leist this week.
The following are a few announcements:
  • Specifics on services and memorial details for our members will be in following emails this week as the information becomes available.
  • The club plans to send representatives to the new Plymouth After Hours Rotary Charter Night this Thursday at 6:00 pm at AQUA .
  • A Christmas gift present exchange was discussed with a gift valued at $25-$30 from each Club member with a grand prize gift valued at $100.  It was proposed by Ken and confirmed by the club for the Christmas party this month.
  • Senior baskets are due for assembly on Dec. 11th; ask John if you need a backup list.  Note that we pack them in our next meeting.  The club is targeting 55 total.
  • See the scheduled events and speakers here on this web page for the latest updates.
Jeanne brought in a new gift catalog that she just recently created for sponsors to purchase the items listed to complete the school in Ghana.  About $15K is still needed to wrap up the project and the beta catalog looked quite nice from the club's preview.  Note that the Canton Club and Canton Foundation has committed funds to support the effort there.
There is no Sergeant today as it is an informal night session, but feel free to order what you want on the menu.
Plymouth After Hours Rotary Club Charter Night
On December 8, 2017, the Plymouth After Hours Rotary Club celebrated their new charter night with District 6400.  Canton Rotary Club members John Kowalski, Ansel Dooley, Lisa Kennedy, and Bill Tesen attended the event and presented a Club Banner to the new Club and President Aaron Shahan.  Congratulations Plymouth After Hours Rotary Club!
Visit by the Canton Historical Society
Topic Today: "2017 Update for the Canton Historical Society" by Director Jordan McCulloch."
John Kowalski started our meeting today on time after a brisk board meeting today.  The following are a few announcements:
  • The sign up list for the bell ringing is circulating.
  • The Salvation Army sent the club a nice thank you letter for it's support on the November food drive.
  • Senior baskets are due for assembly on Dec. 11th.
  • See the scheduled events and speakers here on this web page for the latest updates.
  • Note that our next meeting will be an evening meeting starting at 6:00pm at Antonio's.
Jordan started her presentation with a background of her experiences and education with the Historical Society.  She then discussed some of the new displays and exhibits that are popular in Canton, and she followed up with some research findings for some of the old local families here.  She then discussed new programs with the Society including outreach efforts, scholarship possibilities, and continued future support groups.  This was then followed up by membership along with our own living history Founder member, Bill Brown's excellent memory skills.  We thanked her for her attendance and the club presented her with a Rotary pen and a coin inscribed with Rotary's "4-Way Test".
Check out the Canton Historical Society's web site for holiday activities coming up here at:
The club then gathered to give our long standing and beloved member Greg Gatto a phone call to wish him well, and to let  him know that we are thinking of  him.
Ken was our Sergeant today and he collected well for the club today and got our members to tell some good stories.  Ansel ran the 50/50 and we had John take a shot at he Ace, but it stayed in the shrinking deck.  Pizza was served today.
Thanksgiving Dinner and Angel Tree Donation
Today we celebrated Thanksgiving with a Club potluck, and made our children's Christmas donation.
Today we met at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Canton and celebrated Thanksgiving with a Club potluck.  We shared Rotary fellowship as well as a meal of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, pie, cranberry sauce, cookies, cake, stuffing, corn casserole, green beans, vegetables and dip, rolls and butter, and drinks.  We enjoyed the fellowship of our guests: our server from Antonio's JoDee, Mildred Brown and her daughter guests of member Bill Brown, Jackie Kalmar from Fairlane Sunrise Rotary, Anita Kalmar from Fairlane Sunrise Rotary, Steve Kalmar, Christian Smith from the Salvation Army, Russ Jones from Plymouth noon Rotary, Township Supervisor Pat Williams, Harley Bargy - Sue and John's granddaughter, and Sue Lukasik and Pastor Dave Denzer from St. Michael Lutheran.  Our Club members donated $390.00 to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Project, and our Canton Rotary Foundation matched that amount for a total donation of $780.00.  The Angel Tree Project will use this money to buy socks and underwear for the children who will be the recipients of the Angel Tree Project, as this is the area of greatest need.  We wish all of our friends and families a very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.
Canton Township Treasurer and Utilities Update for 2017

John Kowalski opened our meeting on time today at Antonio's and we had the following short announcements:
  • Members reviewed the bell ringing list and the results of a very successful Kids Against Hunger Passport meeting last Saturday.
  • Next Nov. 20th, Monday, is a special Thanksgiving Lunch being held at St Michael Lutheran Church, 7000 Sheldon Road, Canton, MI, same as last year.  Meet there on Monday at the same time with your lunch item and please see the link for the location details.
  • The Angel Tree Salvation Army collection was started today and the Canton Rotary Foundation will match proceeds up to a $500 total.  Please see John, Sue, or Ansel if you have not already made a donation.
  • Note that the senior baskets are due for assembly on Dec. 11th.
  • See the scheduled events and speakers here on this web page for the latest updates.
We were pleased to have our Treasurer, Dian Slavens, as our guest speaker today.  She gave us a discussion of her background and then provided illustrations of the city Treasurer's services with and update on the recent changes to the water department, quarterly billing processes, and new service agreements with the Great Lakes (water) and YCUA (sewer) companies.  We then had a good Q/A session and the club presented her with a Rotary pen and 4-way test coin.
Check out the Township of Canton's Government Treasurer's Web site.
Zoe from the Salvation Army also attended today's meeting and accepted our donation of 350 boxes of stuffing on behalf of the Salvation Army.  We were happy to help in this worthwhile effort to bring a tasty and nutritious Thanksgiving Dinner to area families.
Bill S. was our Sergeant today and he performed an excellent improvisational program today.  Bill S. also took a shot at the Ace today, but it still hides in the small pile.  Lasagna was on the menu.
