Fellow Rotarians, Family and Friends of Rotary,

As the New Year is about to descend upon us, let us take time to reflect on the tremendous efforts of the Canton Rotary Club and its members.    As a club I challenge you to ask; Have we “Done the Right Thing” and has Rotary “Connected" us and our world?   As your President, I couldn’t be prouder of all your efforts on both fronts.

This past month I observed as we gathered more items than ever and assembled 80 wonderful baskets for the Meals on Wheels seniors.  We had a very nice assembly line going as members eagerly filled them to the brim.  We had fleece throws, stuffed animals, candy, Chapstick, stamps, snacks, drinks, stationery items, Holiday hand towels, lotions and many other items.   Thank you, Bill Brown, for your wonderful supervision and making sure the team stayed on task.  We love you and appreciate all the guidance you have given the club over the years.  John & Sue, we thank you for always getting the bags prepared with stickers so we can all assemble them.  Thank you to all that purchased items and came to assemble the baskets.  So happy to meet and have ShaVonna at the project. Thank you, Wayne/ Westland, for such wonderful support!  I heard from many club members a strong desire to continue this project and club tradition.

Also, this past month, Canton Rotary supported Journey to Housing as we witnessed our first family transition to housing!  What an amazing gift to see Journey’s well-oiled machine move Tiffany and her family into their new apartment. We received numerous thank-you notes from Journey and Tiffany.  The card said that Tiffany’s daughter was in tears when she came home from school and commented that all these people who didn’t even know her loved her!  Tell me Rotary doesn’t connect our world!  It was incredibly rewarding to think that we had just a small part in making someone else’s life just a little bit better.   As you know, the club with the support of our super district 6400, was awarded a grant totaling $2,500 plus the Club portion of $2,500 from our fundraising to provide “kitchen kits”.  The other 9 complete kitchen sets were picked-up and are in Journey’s possession awaiting the next family to transition from homelessness to housing.  Having witnessed the volunteers setting up her kitchen with food and all her items we purchased made my heart burst with joy to be a part of that.  Nothing humbles you more than walking in someone else’s footsteps and being able to alter their course. Great work Rotarians!!!

We had a wonderful Christmas celebration and fellowship at my home.  It was such an honor to have so many people who I care deeply for, and consider “family”, breaking bread in my home.   Many thanks to Sue for the delicious meal she cooked, and all the wonderful deserts and appetizers you all brought.  John and Bill T thanks for carrying everything in and helping prepare for everyone.  It was a special evening and I enjoyed prepping the house for you and Santa’s arrival.  I loved seeing Ezra singing Christmas songs with Santa!  In addition, we gathered many wonderful games and books for “family night” in support of our Journey families.  We will continue to gather items and distribute those to Journey.   We have a few hundred dollars left from the kitchen sets that we will use to purchase a few more items.

On another great note, I am so proud of all the Rotarians that have stepped forward to accept leadership roles for the coming year.   We filled our slate and I will announce at the next meeting who our incoming leadership team is!   It is incumbent upon us to steer the ship, navigate the future, and preserve this wonderful legacy given to us by our founding members.

As we head into the New Year, let our focus be on “doing the right thing” and connecting the world through Rotary.  May God Bless and keep you all!

Last Meeting of 2019 - Senior Baskets and Club Nominations for  2020
Today we assembled senior gift bags reaching our target of 80 and elected club officers for 2020 and beyond.

President Lisa Kennedy started our meeting on time here at the Canton Summit in Heritage Park.

We inducted ShaVonna Johnson who is one of the four alternate members of our Corporate member, Wayne Westland School Community District.  We had a carryin luncheon from Panera while Lisa caught the club up on current events.  This included some Kennedy good time stories on storing some Journey to Housing items for the Rotary, a thank you card for 2019 from the Optimist club, a Camp Able thank you, RYLA 2019 year end news and thanks, and a special thank you from Pat Williams for the club helping out on the Canton Cares Program.

The club then held Elections for officers for the 2020/2021 Rotary year.  The approved slate for 2020-2021 is as follows:

Officers:
  Incoming President-Sue Kowalski (2020-2021)
  President Elect (2021-2022)- Bill Simmerer

  Secretary-Bill Tesen
  Treasurer-Nate Houghton
  Past President (2020-2021)-Lisa Kennedy

Directors:

  Ansel Dooley.

Thank you to the current club board as they guide us through 2019-2020 and we look forward to a right good new year in 2020.  The club then gathered to assemble the 80 senior gift bags.

This concluded our last club meeting for calendar year 2019.  Make sure to watch out for the Rotary float if members watch the rose bowl parade in 2020.

Note our next meeting will be as follows:

Journey To Housing (J2H) Move In

On Friday, December 6th, a few members from our Club transported the contents of our first Kitchen Box to the new apartment of our first recipient.  Shown here is Bill Tesen with a trunk full of kitchen supplies.
Volunteers from Journey To Housing (an affiliate of St. Vincent de Paul) were on hand to help set up the apartment and move the family in.  Volunteers from J2H are shown above stocking the kitchen cupboards.  These volunteers moved in food for the kitchen pantry, furniture, new mattresses, living room furniture, dining room furniture, bathroom necessities, and other items.  As listed in the article from December 5th, the Canton Rotary Club provided all of the kitchen necessities, such as dishes, glasses, silverware, pots and pans, coffee pot, crock pot, kitchen knives, colander, can opener, and all of the other items that are needed to operate a family kitchen.  Thank you Journey To Housing volunteers for all that you do to help these working homeless families to become productive and independent members of the community.  And thanks to all of our Canton Rotary members for the work which you did to support this project.  Also, thank you to the staff at Kennedy Nemier Insurance Agency who got together and purchased Christmas gifts for the family.  The gifts are pictured below around the family's Christmas tree.

Packing Boxes of Kitchen Supplies for J2H
On December 5th several members met at Lisa's home to pack up boxes of kitchen supplies to donate to Journey To Housing.  Journey To Housing is one of our current District Grant Projects.  Our Club contributed half and District 6400 contributed half for a total of $5,000 which we spent on kitchen supplies and family night supplies for 10 families that are being sponsored by Journey To Housing, an affiliate of St. Vincent de Paul.
The first family who are a recipient of our donations were due to move into their new apartment the next day on December 6th.  Lisa had led the Club in purchasing our kitchen supplies which included silverware, dishes, pots and pans, kitchen linens, coffee pots, cutlery, and crock pots, among the various items a new kitchen needs.  We were able to put together items for 10 kitchens to be given out to the recipients.  The families who are a part of this project are families of the working homeless.  Journey To Housing works with these homeless families to help them manage their finances better, obtain training so that they can get a better job, and find housing for their families.  We are humbled to have this opportunity to help these families, and are grateful to those people who have supported our events, and to our District 6400 for granting us these funds.

Thanksgiving Celebration
On November 25th the Canton Rotary Club celebrated Thanksgiving with a potluck traditional Thanksgiving Dinner.  We met at the Cherry Hill School on Ridge Road at Cherry Hill in Canton.  Each member brought a dish to pass.  Our food for the day included a fresh roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, and many desserts including chocolate cream pie, apple pie, pecan pie, and several more.  This is an annual tradition of our Club.  Members, their families, and guests are invited each year.  This year, unfortunately, we did not get any pictures.  We hope that more guests will join us next year, and I promise to remember to take pictures.  In the meantime, here is a link to pictures from our November 2009 Thanksgiving Celebration.  https://content.clubrunner.ca/616/Photo/List?AlbumId=4e07f074-d2c5-4487-9f21-b4bd563d2bc1
Canton Rotary Rings Bell for Salvation Army Red Kettle
On Saturday, November 16th, members from the Canton Rotary Club volunteered to ring the bell for the Salvation Army Red Kettle.  Despite the cold weather, everyone enjoyed the day, and the Salvation Army was the beneficiary of our volunteer work.
Speaker Richard Price and Club Collects Thanksgiving Stuffing for Salvation Army
Today our Club welcomed Mr. Richard Price from 2elate as our speaker.  We also collected over 125 boxes of turkey stuffing for The Salvation Army  Thanksgiving Baskets.
Richard Price from 2Elate spoke to our Club about the elements of a healthy small business.  He stressed the need for the right people to fill the right positions.  It is important to document the process and that the process be followed by all involved.  He talked about "Traction" which is bringing the Vision down to all who are involved in the business and then involving everyone in the execution of the vision.  While our speaker gave us a great overview of what he does for small businesses, his website gives a much more detailed view.  Please see this website here https://www.2elate.com.

We also collected 134 boxes of turkey stuffing today for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Baskets.  Thank you members for your generous donations.
